The topic of this essay is the types of knowledge and the mentalities behind the construction of the cupola over the Dome of Florence Santa Maria del Fiore during the years 1420-1436, rather than its technological features and architectonic style frequently discussed elsewhere. The cupola is a unique condensation of mentalities from the three epochs: tradition, early renaissance humanism, and the 17th. Century counter-renaissance, that - according to Steven Toulmin - struggled for dominance at the beginning of modernity.
