Sammendrag
The City of Bergen, which in the year 2000 had the status of a European City of Culture, is taken as the starting point for this article. One of the arrangements, considered to be characteristic for the cultural programme, formed the background for the thematisation of place in relation to the urbane and the rural, together with local, national and international dimensions. The perspectives are focussed on how a cultural city arrangement based on a local cultural setting and cultural inheritance, is used, on the one hand, as more or less conscious strategies for profiling the place, and, on the other hand, as elements in people's concept of life, thus enabling a sense of belonging.
