Consequences of New public management, request to relevance, reduced space of time to scientific work and more demand to the scientists to work in projects are threats to the assignment universities have in the society according to the Swedish book Det hotade universitetet. The article takes the Faculty of humanities, University of Oslo, as starting point to show in what way the implementation of research politics with emphasis on relevance and financial earnings undermines the humanities both in a financial and in a prestigious way.
To solve the crisis, we need politicians with visions and ability to develop a policy that accept the humanities as a important branch of science, even though the humanities are not profitable.
