Sammendrag

Ulikestilling mellom menn og kvinner er et sentralt sosiologisk tema, som er interessant blant annet fordi det er så komplekst. Biologiske forskjeller vikles sammen med sosialisering, stereotypier og strukturell ulikhet som gjør spørsmål om endring og stabilitet særlig utfordrende. Den amerikanske sosiologen Cecilia L. Ridgeway har skrevet en bok som tar denne utfordringen på strak arm. Ridgeway var president i American Sociological Association i 2013, og har vært en toneangivende skikkelse i amerikansk sosiologisk forskning på sosial ulikhet og kjønnslikestilling i en årrekke. I boka Framed by Gender gjør Ridgeway et forsøk på å forklare hvordan ulikestilling mellom kjønnene opprettholdes og reproduseres i moderne samfunn. Stikkordet her er hvordan - hun gjør nettopp et poeng ut av at hun ikke har som mål å svare på hvorfor-spørsmålet.
