Sammendrag

Only a couple of years after the impressive three-volume Painted Altar Frontals of Norway 1250-1350 was published in 2004 by Unn Plahter et al., another book closely connected with Plahter and Scandinavian medieval art was conceived - a festschrift-  in commemoration of her 70th birthday.-  For those who could have missed it - Plahter is a research pioneer in the field of early oil painting and medieval painting technique not only in Norway, but internationally. Employed by the Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo, at a time when there were almost no chemists working in Norwegian museums, she has also played an important role in the history of modern conservation in this country. Weaving narratives for artistic productions from chemical data, physical and visual clues as well as reconstructions, art history and contemporary documentary source material, Plahter has contributed to a more comprehensive understanding of medieval painting in Northern Europe and the festschrift's title also reflects this: Medieval painting in Northern Europe. Techniques, analysis, art history.
