Sammendrag

Global crises, such as armed conflicts, pandemics, and environmental collapse, have foregrounded the problem of how we relate to the world and to one another. Relatedly, spurred by the ontological turn in anthropology in recent decades, cultural and epistemic differences—and the question of commensurability—have been thematized in cultural inquiry. In order to further theorize how otherness is constructed in cross-cultural encounters, and the societal inequalities the process enables, this dissertation historicized the practice of inscribing cultural difference.
