Abstract

In this article it is argued that the dogma of "social construction" has little meaning concerning smell. Smell is basically a personal experience, and the social phenomena connected to it - like class or ethnicity - are rather obvious. Indeed, the sociology of smell covers everything and nothing. I conclude by saying that smell is probably better discussed as literature or psychology, and is - in contrast to most sociological questions - not necessarily open to so-called "further research".
