Sammendrag

Med jevne mellomrom dukker det opp påstander om at klassesamfunnet er døende eller i oppløsning (se for eksempel Clark & Lipset 1991, Pakulski & Waters 1996). Spissformulert kan påstandene deles i to hovedtyper: Den første er optimistisk og forventer at generell velstandsøkning fjerner sosial ulikhet av betydning (strukturer betyr ikke noe), den andre er mer postmoderne, legger vekt på individualisering og hevder at strukturer ikke finnes.
