Sammendrag

Consequences of New public management, request to relevance, reduced space of time to scientific work and more demand to the scientists to work in projects are threats to the assignment universities have in the society according to the Swedish book Det hotade universitetet. Reports from evaluations in Norway give support to these opinions. What is the reason to the situation?
The article takes the Faculty of humanities, University of Oslo, as starting point to show in what way the implementation of research politics with emphasis on relevance and financial earnings undermines the humanities both in a financial and in a prestigious way.
