Sammendrag

I år er det 40 år siden Sosiologi i Dag ble etablert på en studenthybel på Sogn studentby i Oslo med nyanskaffet offsetmaskin, nærmest som et undergrunnstiltak mot oppløsningstendensene som da truet sosiologifaget. I internasjonal sosiologi hadde "the orthodox consensus" rundt det struktur-­funksjonalistiske paradigmet nettopp gått i oppløsning (Giddens 1984: xv). Et spekter av alternative tilnærminger i faget oppsto fra innsiden og la grunnlaget for disiplinens streben etter å forstå og fortolke individuelle handlinger, snarere enn å forklare menneskelig atferd. Faget utviklet seg til et mønstereksempel på en akademisk disiplin med en divergent fagkultur (Becher 1989) som en følge av et teoretisk, metodisk og politisk opprør. Eller som Stein Rokkan formulerer det:

Sociology had aspired to the status of the widest ranging, the most general of the social sciences, but ended up as the most fragmented of them all: the discipline wanted to pose as the queen, it ended up as the clown of the sciences of man. (Crawford & Rokkan 1976: 9)
