I sin forskning forholder mange sosiologer og samfunnsvitere seg til fenomenologiske begreper, og fenomenologisk inspirert tenkning om begreper som livsverden, intersubjektivitet, mening, handling og samhandling i sin forskning. De fleste har vel også som utgangspunkt at mennesket er grunnleggende sosialt og ikke kan tenkes utenfor det sosiale. Hva disse innsiktene betyr for den enkelte forsker mer spesifikt, og hvilke føringer de får på forskningens metodiske og teoretiske tilslag helt konkret, vil naturligvis variere.Dette temanummeret handler om grunnlaget for fenomenologiske begreper og tenkning. Hvilken situasjon oppsto den i, og hvilke metodologiske og teoretiske utfordringer byr den på?
