At det blir gitt ut en bok i 2012 om romantiske relasjoner skrevet av en amerikanskutdannet sosiolog, kan forbause noen, men det bør ikke overraske dem som er kjent med sosiologiens historie i USA. Eva Illouz' "Why love hurts: A Sociological Explanation" passer godt inn i en omfattende forskningstradisjon i USA. Patricia Wilner (1985) har dokumentert dette i en analyse av American Sociological Review, det offisielle tidsskriftet til The American Sociological Association. Hun fant at bare fem prosent av artiklene som ble publisert mellom 1936 og 1983, berørte temaer som gjaldt kapitalisme, arbeidsledighet, frem­vekst av fascisme, andre verdenskrig, den kalde krigen, bevegelser for sivile rettigheter, utfordringer for det patriarkalske hegemoni, Vietnamkrigen og globale anti-imperialistiske bevegelser. Wilners viktigste oppdagelse var at temaet "livspartnervalg" fikk størst akademisk oppmerksomhet i løpet av disse fem tiårene med sosial endring og uro.
