Sammendrag

Counterfactuals and Causal Inference ble først utgitt i 2007. Min utgave fra 2010 er sjuende opptrykk. Interessen har altså vært stor. Mange samfunnsforskere strever jo med hvordan "årsak" skal forstås og analyseres. Ikke bare forskere etterspør årsaksanalyser. I debattene vrimler påstander om at slankemetoder "har effekt", at private helsetilbud "helt sikkert" reduserer køene og at innstramninger "garantert" vil overvinne krisa i økonomien. I dag tør knapt noen politiker begrunne et forslag kun med verdistandpunkter. Instrumentell tenkning har hegemoniet. Alt skal vurderes med effekter som målestokk, og media krever at forskningen skal dokumentere utvetydig hva virkningene er av tiltak, inngrep og politikk.
