Hannah Kristine Bjørke Lunde försvarade sin doktorsavhandling Pilgrimage Matters. Administrative and Semiotic Landscapes of Contemporary Pilgrimage Realisations in Norway vid Oslo universitet i oktober 2022. Avhandlingens syfte är att undersöka administrativa och semiotiska processer sammanhängande med förverkligandet av norska pilgrimslandskap. Analysen utgår från de två fallstudierna av Sunnivaleden till ön Selja och St. Olavsvägarna till Trondheim.

Det er også et temanummer for forskningsprosjektet Back to Blood: Pursuing a Future from the Norse Past, som er finansiert av Norges Forskningsråd (prosjektnr. 301273). Back to Blood: Pursuing a Future from the Norse Past ble tildelt midler i 2019 og startet opp med professor Anne Kalvig som prosjektleder i 2020. Ved Kalvigs utgang fra prosjektet i 2022 ble ledelsen overført til undertegnede.

Nordic Animism has become one of the more significant new theologies within the modern Pagan and Heathen community. Based on a counter-reading of earlier, often colonial, interpretations of religions that was perceived to belong to a more primitive form of religion, modern forms of Animism see in these religions a more holistic approach to existence that it is argued is needed to counter the coming ecological crisis the world is facing. This article presents how Nordic Animism is based on a reception of Animism and Pagan religions that dates back to the 19th century and how this reception has been reimagined to create a meaningful spiritual narrative for the Heathens of the 21th century.

In October 2022, Ubisoft’s official Twitter account for their highly popular digital game series Assassin’s Creed (Ubisoft 2007–; hereafter AC) proclaimed triumphantly that «[o]ver 20 million Vikings have embarked on their epic journey to Valhalla. Standing strong by Eivor’s side. From Norway to England. To Mythical Realms of the Gods. Thank you for taking this journey with us. SKAL! #AssassinsCreed» (Twitter-konto @assassinscreed 2022a). At the time, the Viking-themed installation in the series, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (Ubisoft 2020; hereafter ACV), had been available for almost two years. Ubisoft’s pre-release marketing campaign had promised players «the ultimate Viking fantasy» (Phillips 2020), after assuring potential customers that the Vikings historically speaking were better than their reputation. The game trailer invited players to «think like a Viking», «live like a Viking», «fight like a Viking», and «conquer like a Viking» (IGN 2020). In the global games industry, AC is a highly popular brand and Ubisoft a central supplier. The reception of ACV, which has been overwhelmingly positive, has strengthened the company’s position in Viking-themed popular culture. With a reputation for offering “historical authenticity” by means of virtual reconstructions of specific cultures in specific historical eras, the AC series is an interesting object of study. This is all the more underscored by the fact that the series is partly marketed for use in education. At the same time, ACV is only one of a long and growing list of Viking-related cultural procuts. In this article, I ask what we can learn by studying ACV’s Viking image in a ludic perspective, and how that approach may contribute to our understanding of the contemporary popularity of Vikings. Employing the terms Viking power, Viking identity, and Viking spirituality, I hope to offer tools for understanding the complex field that is the use of Vikings and the Norse past today.

In recent years images of the Vikings have inspired the development of new approaches in the international fitness training sector as well as fitness influencers in re-enactment environments and Contemporary Paganism. This paper introduces a wide selection of novel approaches to Vikings in fitness and strength training and traces their historical origins, modern contexts and strategies of gendering the human body and the past. In an analysis of the masculinisation of Viking training, I argue that the modern Viking fitness training trend contains elements of Vitalism, Darwinism, Romanticism and Muscular Christianity.

Feltnotat om Midgardsblot

Med spørreundersøkelser, intervju og kontakt med arrangører forsøker vi å finne ut hvordan vi kan beskrive hva Midgardsblot betyr for deltakere, arrangører og artister og analyserer festivalen som et slags kulturelt og -religiøst laboratorium. Vi distribuerte en digital spørreundersøkelse i forkant av festivalen. Undersøkelsen for 2022 fikk 167 respondenter før datavask og så langt 139 i 2023 (den er fortsatt åpen). Den spør deltakerne blant annet om alder, kjønn, opphavsland, transportmidler, festivalplaner, roller, og hva som var viktigst for dem personlig ved Midgardsblot. Vi ber dem også indikere stedets betydning på ulike vis, i tillegg til vikingtematikkens og metaltematikkens betydning. Etterpå spør vi hvordan deltakerne identifiserer seg med tanke på religion og spiritualitet og i hvilken grad deres religiøse eller spirituelle identitet er viktig for dem. Til slutt inviterer vi dem til et oppfølgingsintervju.

28 respondenter sa seg villige til å stille til oppfølgingsintervju i 2022 og 36 i 2023. Noen intervjues i løpet av festivalen, mens andre intervjues i etterkant. Noen lyktes vi ikke i å få kontakt med. Den pågående spørreundersøkelsen, samt nye intervjuer i etterkant av Midgardsblot 2023, markerer avslutningen på datainnsamlingen knyttet til feltarbeid. I tillegg samler vi inn de dokumenter vi får tilgang til fra aktuelle aktører.
